Relay for Life - Yearbooks - Drama

Our Relay for Life team sends this message:

Dedicate a luminaria (a paper bag filled with sand and a candle) to be lit and displayed around the track during the luminaria ceremony at Relay for Life of Cobb County this weekend at Jim Miller Park in Marietta.  Luminaria serve as symbols of hope as we continue to work for a cure for this disease,  The luminaria ceremony will begin at 10 PM on Friday, May 8, and everyone is invited to attend - you do not need to be a Relay for Life participant to take part or to dedicate a luminaria.  With your donation, you may designate an individual whose name will be printed on the luminaria bag.  Suggested donation:  $10.

The yearbook committee sends this message:

Yearbooks $40 Cash - Limited Quantities Available!!!  A LIMITED number of Yearbooks are still available for $40 CASH until Wednesday May 13th. The price of the yearbook will increase to $45 after this day.   We are also selling an insert for the yearbook containing world events like the presidency, olympics, super bowl, and movies from this year in the supplement of the World Yearbook. These are available for $5.  Money should be placed in a school envelope and labeled yearbook and/or world yearbook supplement.

Now for class information:
7th:  We finished our work with Let Me Hear You Whisper. We will continue with our drama readings on Friday.

8th:  Students received their writing portfolios today to take home.  I hope that they make it and that students share their year's writings with you.  Those folders are pretty thick!  We also took time to discuss poetry vocabulary.  Tomorrow...Old Possum's book of Practical Cats

Literacy:  The writing assignment for each novel is due Friday at the end of class if there is no field and OR Monday at the beginning of class if there is field day.

Thownk – Bauer

Imagine having a personal cupid--an actual winged being--pop into your life and offer to make your dreams come true. The catch is he can help you in only one way: artistically, academically, or romantically. Discuss which aspect YOU would choose.  Be sure to include the pros and cons once chosen.

The Weirdo – Taylor

Select one conflict below and discuss how the conflict was part of the novel and the solutions for the conflict.

Chip’s dealing with memories of the plane crash

Conflict between Chip and his father

Sam’s friend’ reactions when she told them about Chip

Sam’s feelings about being in the middle of the “Save the Bear” campaign taking Chip’s

side versus her father’s side

Sam’s confrontation with her father over the trapped bear

Sam’s taking a stand with Chip against her father at the meeting

The Secret Life of Amanda K. Woods - Cameron

Why is it hard for people to show their real selves to others? Has it ever been difficult for

you?  Discuss the situation and the decision you made.

Amanda tries to get her father to talk to her. Why do you think parents sometimes are

closed off from their children, like Amanda's father? What experience have you had that makes you feel this way?  What could you do to have better communication with your parents?

Margaret changes a lot in the book. What changes do you see in her, and what do you

think are the causes? Amanda changes a lot, too. How would you describe the changes in her?

The Worst of Times

The Great Depression was a bleak time in

America

.  Compare and contrast the book’s

experiences/descriptions with what you see in today’s economy/society.  Give

your outlook for the future.

The Invisible Man – Wells

The hunter and the hunted each see invisibility differently.  Choose one of the following statements and discuss your thoughts in detail.

Being invisible would be awesome/awful because…..

Science of this type should/should not be controlled by the world’s governments.

Wrapping up

There is no DGP this week.  Monday was a regrouping day both for me and the students from the Disney trip.  Papers, papers everywhere!

7th - The Generation to Generation projects were awesome. We  spent part of Monday and Tuesday listening to the different generational items. The students also seemed to enjoy this one!  Tuesday we also discussed drama.  Students have 10 words to define as they pertain to drama and plays: antagonist   aside   critique   improvisation  lazzi  mime  monologue   soliloquy   stage left & stage right

8th - After Monday's paper pushing, we reviewed for today's test on the novel Night.  A powerful 1st person narrative, Elie Weisel's story reminds us that it is never the wrong time to do the right thing.  The RAFT poems that were done were phenominal!  Wow - empathy and emotion!  Tomorrow, 8th graders will take their 4th 9 post test.

Literacy:  Students are continuing to read the novel they chose.  All are to be completed by the end of class on Thursday.  Their final assignment for their novel will be assigned then and will be done over the weekend if we have Field Day on Friday.
