Two More Weeks!

Hi to All My Students and Parents:

We have only a short time to go and so much to learn before you go on to 8th grade.

Literacy

Monday - We finish Chicken Run and discuss how media repeats itself with minor modifications.

Tuesday through Friday - Feature Film Project with paper to write.

Social Studies

Monday - We will go over the comparison/contrast between Japan and the U.S. governments. We will read the preamble of the Japanese Constitution and discuss it's features.

Tuesday - We will begin Notes on Japanese Economics and Culture.

Wednesday - Current Event  Due      Complete Econ and Culture and review Japan Map for Test.

Thursday - Review for Japan Test

Friday - Japan Test

**All plans are subject to change due to school events/activities.

So much to learn...So little time

Hi to all my Students and Parents:

I have plans for the  week except when Friday / Field Day  takes over the schedule. Social Studies books are to be checked Tueday May 6th. Bring yours to school! Notebooks are due on Wednesday, May 7th. Let's all get an "A" on this one!

Literacy:

Monday - We finish the Great Race , a classic comedy from 1963 starring Tony Curtiss, Jack Lemon, and Natalie Wood.

Tuesday / Wednesday - We will be comparing two documentaries.

Thursday - Something New!

Social Studies

Monday - We finish The Samurai Power Point and begin our discussion of 20th Century Japan

Tuesday - Hiroshima and Nagasaki - White Light/Black Rain - there will be an in-class writing assignment

Textbook Checkin day - May 6th...let's get 'em counted!

Wednesday -  Finish the Atomic Bomb assignment and begin Japanese Governemt after WWII.

Social Studies Notebook is due Wednesday May 7th

Thursday - Japanese Government and Economics

Welcome Back!

Hi to all My Students and Parents:

Hope you got your batteries recharged and are ready to study and Pass that CRCT!

Literacy:

Monday - Movies and Sound...in honor of the 146th Anniversary we will be watching "The General" with Buster Keaton...a silent classic of the Great Locomotive Chase.

Tuesday thru Thursday - Anime Sound ...we will be viewing Porco Rosso a film set between WWI & II. Voice Talent provided by Michael Keaton (Batman) and Ann Hathaway (Princess Diaries).

Friday - yet to be announced

Social Studies

Monday -  We will recap and score the test I assigned over Spring Break. Then We will begin Chapter 22 - SE Asia, Sec 1 on History and Government. (Guided Notes & Map)

Tuesday - Finish Section 1 and continue into Section 2, Economy and Culture. 2 column Notes . Collect Notebooks

Wednesday - Chapter 22, Section 3 The Vietnam War

Thursday - Chapt 22 Quiz and Begin Chapter 23

Friday- Current Event Due - Chapter 23 Continued

It's Almost Break Time!

Hi to Alll my Students and Parents:

This week is no time to rest as we continue to learn all we can before CRCT.

Literacy:

Monday - Wednesday: We will learn to take character notes by viewing a Disney Movie that will give you a glimpse into the soul and scare you at the same time...Something Wicked This Way Comes! A short paper will follow.

Thursday & Friday - We will be watching and listening as the Control Voice takes us to "The Outer Limits" of 1963's award winning "the Man Who Was Never Born" , a Beauty and the Beast tale with a Sci-fi twist. Who was the hero and who was the "beast"?

Social Studies:

Monday - Recap of Friday's test on the Religions of South and Eastern Asia. Notes on the Taj Mahal begins our study of the Cultures of South Asia.

Tuesday - We continue with Chapter 21, Section 4 - the Culture of South Asia notes and India's "Bollywood" a look at film-making in India .

Wednesday - A look at Pakistan, it's origins and status as a nuclear power. Also, beginning review of Chapter 21 for the Test on Friday.

Thurday - Review for the Test

Friday - Chapter 21 Test and discussion of CRCT before we Break.

Plans are subject to change and adjustments are being made so those going to Disney with Chorus or on a trip can still keep up their studies.

Hello to All my Students and Parents:

Attention Parents: I sent home a new Syllabus this past week with all my students. It outlined changes in my grading for fourth quarter and it also stated that no late assignments will be accepted. The only exception will be from absence or other pre-arranged circumstances. This is in final preparation for 8th grade. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me via e-mail or through the school.

Literacy

Monday - We finish the 1982 movie "Annie" and take note of the 1930's Radio City Music Hall spectacular and Bert Healy radio show that are part of this film. This is in preparation for students to work in pairs on their own Radio Drama.

Tuesday - Radio Drama Project begins - will will view film of Jack Benny's 1942 Radio Program, and a "behind the scenes" film that shows radio drama sound effects. We will also listen to Mercury Theatre's War of the World's, the 1938 radio broadcast that paniced the U.S. on Halloween.

Wednesday & Thursday - Radio Drama Project...a 3 to 5 minute dialog between two or more students with sound effects like it would be heard on the radio in the 1930's-40's. Students will be given time to work in class on their script and sound effects.

Friday - Radio Drama Presentations begin.

Social Studies

Monday & Tuesday - Religion in South Asia: Hinduism and Buddhism and how they have influenced and continue to influence their societies. The Anticipation Guide is a pretest for students and the guided notes summarize the class - information is found in the Text. Downloads are available above.

Wednesday - We continue our exploration of Religions in South and Eastern Asia. We will analyze religious belief systems such as Zen Buddhism, Toaism, Confucianism, Buddhism in China and Shinto in Japan.

My class will benefit this week from several lessons on Culture in South Asia that I am writing in collaboration with Cobb County experts.  I will be adding to the blog as the week continues. 

I will be uplaoding more files as soon as they are available for students at home due to illness or other circumstances.

4th Quarter Begins

Hi to all my Students and Parents:

We begin a new week with a change in Literacy Classes...I hope all of the class I am receiving is as excited as I am about this last 9 weeks. CRCT and plenty of learning to be done! Don't Miss it...

Literacy

Monday - Tuesday : Since we are studying Asia, many  of thr culture items we see from them reflect our own influence with fashion, literature, media (TV/ Movies) and Music. We will begin by examining Asian popular music and how language can be the difference betweem being hooked or turned off by it. I will be presenting several artists in music videos that we will discuss and analyze.

Wednesday thru Friday - a short history of Broadcasting starting with telegraphy and ending with HDTV.

Social Studies

Monday through Friday we continue with Chapter 21 - India and South Asia.  We will discuss the Governments of the various nations, the Economics, and Culture of this area of the world. By weeks end I hope to begin review for a test on the chapter.

Monday: there will be a handout to take notes as we read Chapter 21, Section 2...pgs 615 - 619. 

I will update the blog Monday evening with more information as Ms. Lipscomb and I are discussing addtional material to be sure to meet CRCT needs and Georgia Standards.

THIRD ALMOST DOWN - 5 TO GO

HELLO TO ALL MY STUDENTS AND PARENTS:

JUST 5 SHORT DAYS TO THE NEXT REPORT CARD. ANY OUTSTANDING WORK SHOULD BE IN MY HANDS BY THIS THURSDAY THE 13, SO I MAY POST IT.

LITERACY

MONDAY THRU FRIDAY WE WILL BE FOCUSING ON "THE MOVIES AND THE ENVIRONMENT" - PARTICULARLY ISSUES OF WATER, SOIL, AND AIR POLLUTION.I HOPE TO ALSO DISCUSS POPULATION ISSUES AS IT RELATES TO OUR STUDIES IN ASIA. WE WILL BEGIN WITH AN ANIMATED FILM CALLED "PRINCESS MONONOKE", A FILM ABOUT MAN'S EARLY TECHNOL OGY, AND THE DESTRUCTION OF THE FOREST.

WE MAY BE VISITED ON WEDNESDAY BY NORTH COBB SENIORS AND THEIR CHARACTER-BUILDER LESSONS.

SOCIAL STUDIES

THIS WEEK WILL BE LEARNING ABOUT INDIA AND ITS NEIGHBORS TODAY. LESSONS WILL BE CENTERED AROUND THE ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES, ECONOMIC ISSUES AND CULTURAL ISSUES SOUTH ASIA FACES:

THE POLLUTION OF WATER RESOURCES LIKE THE GANGES

THE GROWTH OF "ASIAN BROWN CLOUD" - AN AIR POLLUTION DISASTER

OVERPOPULATION - RELIGIOUS / SOCIETAL CHOICES

ECONOMICS - PROGRAMS TO MANAGE OVERF A BILLION PEOPLE

CULTURAL - ANCIENT AND TODAY MINGLING TO MODERNIZE NATIONS

LESSONS WILL BE A MIX OF POWERPOINT AND OTHER ACTIVITIES, DON'T MISS IT!

March Comes in...

Hello to all my Students and Parents:

Literacy-

Monday - We have SIP survey to give all 7th grade students

Tuesday & Wednesday- We will finish our trip to Shangri la with the movie "Lost Horizon" and discuss  the need for a place that all men can be at peace and why people dream of the "ideal" world - even though we know it is not possible...or is it?

Thursday & Friday - to be announced.

Social Studies

Monday - Mahatma Gandhi - his life, his beliefs, the collapse of India's Colonialism, his death - a handout and clips from the Academy Award Winning movie with Ben Kingsley.

Tuesday Thru Friday

We continue with Chapter 21 - India and it's Neighbors

Subjects will include:

The Silk Road; Environmental Issues in the Ganges and Indus River Valleys; Government Policies; The Impact of Location on Trade and Industry in India and Pakistan; and the Distribution of Natural Resources - how it affects the development of Pakistan and India.

I will update my Blog, Monday evening with more detail.

Missing the Grade...

Hello to all my Students and Parents,

Five full days to learn this week! Let's put them to good use...so that your report card reflects your hard work.

Literacy

Monday - Television and Politics...we continue discussing the amazing parallels between the 1960 campaign and the current one... Even the fear of assasination. Video clips of 1963 thru '68 - triumph and tragedy.

Tuesday thru Friday- Asia and India is our "Big Movie" Theme that ends February. We discuss foreign film and Hollywoods' foreign myths. Film clips from Gandhi, Charley Chan,etc... and our Feature - Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom!

Social Studies -

Monday - Return to Chapter 20...review for test begins.

Tuesday - Study Guide and Review Game

Wednesday - Chapter 20 Geography Test

Thursday - Begin Chapter 21 - India and its' neighbors

Friday - Current Event Due, Notebook Due! We continue with India
