We are reviewing for CRCT this week using the DOL as well as the workbook.  Wednesday, we are taking a practice CRCT test.  Students are completing their novel studies and will be presenting on Thursday and Friday of this week.

In literacy, students completed "The All-American Slurp" and after a review of the story, took a test.  The next story will be "Dragon, Dragon" with a test following.  Students enjoy the silent reading we do during each class as well as the sharing about their books afterwards.

March 31-April 4

Novel Project C was due today, March 31.  I will accept it tomorrow with ten points deducted.  It will be too late to accept after that.  Some really nice projects were shared today by students in all four of my LA classes.  Tomorrow, we will complete the sharing of projects and work on completing the novel.  Since we are going on the field trip Wednesday, it will probably be the Wednesday after Spring break before we are completely finished with the novel study.

A new DOL was introduced today with words in a series, punctuation, and phrases to study as well as compound nouns.

We will be leaving from the bus port of Awtrey at 8:15 on Wednesday for our field trip.  Students should have all the information needed but just a few reminders.

  • Parents - on time both for departure and arrival back at school
  • Students are responsible for anything they bring
  • No food or drinks on the bus
  • Anything brought must be left on the bus when we arrive at our destination

Thanks for everything.

Report cards will be sent home with students on Thursday, March 20th.  Also on March 20th, Language Arts projects from List B are due.

As an in-class activity, LA students began to make a scrapbook of information from their novel.  Each student in the group will complete a page of the scrapbook which will include depictions of characters, setting, theme, and plot.  We should have this completed by the end of class on Tuesday and will then resume reading the novels.

A new dol was given today which will be followed by a test on Friday.  Remind students to review/study the dol each night and to be sure to have the second project ready to bring in on Thursday.

The new Literacy class began today with a trip to the library to make sure each student has a library book for the silent reading portion of the class.  They will be learning literary terms, studying short stories, plays, poems, and folklore.  Tests usually follow each story.  Also a grade will be given for the in-class reading which is shared in a discussion with the rest of the class.

A new dol was given today and again, a test will be given on Friday of this week.

In Literacy students began reading folk tales and fables.  Starting tomorrow, the literacy class will write a folktale using our Awtrey Attitude slogans as well as the rules in the handbook.

Feb.11-15, 2008

On the 11th students began a new dol, took a post test, and studied verb tense from page 481 and 482 of their textbook.  On the 12th, the students discussed the remaining information that needed to be covered for the dol this week.  They will have a quiz on Friday on all this information.  Mr. Markham (our TOSS student) began a planned lesson on the verbs and discussed the research project on presidents which will begin on Wednesday.  Homework was assigned on Tuesday, pages 87 and 88 in the workbook.  It was checked and graded on Wednesday.  In our classroom we have a cart of books from the library on all the presidents.  Students began their research by writing the first source information from the book they are using.  They will then take notes on the life of the president.  Students will be using at least three sources which will all be located in the classroom including computers.  This project will continue Wednesday and Thursday of next week.

Jan. 28-Feb.1

Thank you for a very productive conference week.  This week students were given a test on helping verbs as well as a test on action, linking, and helping verbs.  This has been listed in their agenda for a week along with notes to study for the tests.  They began a new DOL on Monday and have their notes on it to study for the test this Friday.  In the mean time, we are learning more about persuasive writing such as logical, emotional, and ethical ways of persuading; mood, tone, bias, audience, and purpose.  We have used activities to enhance the learning such as Sir Sam Hughes (bias) and the wolf's trial from The Three Little Pigs (refute).

Students need to study the new DOL each night.  We took the pretest for this nine weeks today.

We began the persuasive writing unit by discussing the essential question, "How can I convince you to accept my opinion?"  This led into a discussion of advertisements from various mediums.

Tuesday will be an introductory activity using vocabulary words from the pretest followed by a mini-lesson on interjections.

Wednesday is the eighth grade writing assessment.  Each grade level will be writing.  In sixth grade, we will keep our homeroom students through first and second periods in order to do a baseline persuasive writing.

The rest of the week will include dol, What's my Product" activity, learning about types of advertisements, identify tone, mood, and emotion of ads, and have a dol quiz on Friday.

Homework will be assigned only as needed.
