Essential Questions:  How can I use Standard English grammar to support my communication skills?  How can I use technical writing to communicate in today's world?

Awtrey 6th Grade ONLY Dance-November 19 -Thursday from 4:30-6:00.
Tickets go on sale on November 17.

Language Arts-

DGP Quiz-We corrected a new sentence with quotations marks.  The sentences you wrote this week had quotations.  We graded them in class, and it seems that most of you did a great job!

Friendly letters were returned to you today.  If you want to make corrections and rewrite or type the letter for a better grade, you may. Just bring it to me on Monday. Some of you have to redo yours because there were way too many errors to be graded.  Bring it back on Monday because you do not have a grade now.

The final copy of the business letter was turned in today for a grade.

Monday there will be a substitute because I will be with the other language arts teachers grading the mock writing papers you did on Wednesday.  You will have a story/questions to complete and a preposition practice sheet to complete.  1st. period has their sheets, so do not lose them!

Literacy-

We shared the hyperbole fish story and decided who wrote the "tallest"
tale!  Then, we began another hyperbole activity.

Language Arts-

DGP-Correct the 2 sentences-

     I.

Study your sentences for a quiz tomorrow.  It will not be a regular quiz,and I may even just have your turn your sentences in.  Be sure to look over how to correctly punctuate quotations.

We checked page 380 in the Reader's Journey.  Please remember to bring your book every day from now on, or you will have points removed.

We peer-edited the rough draft of your business letter.  The final copy is due tomorrow either in blue or black ink or typed on the computer.
Remember to check your letter again the example in the Reader's Journey, page 474.  Check for capitalization and punctuation.  Also, be aware of the differences in the friendly letter and business letter format.

Literacy-

After reading silently, we worked on writing a paragraph using hyperbole.
Then, we share the "Figure It" worksheet completed on Monday.

Attention!  6th grade ONLY dance on November 19th from 4:30-6:00.

Language Arts-

DGP-Correct 2 more sentences to add to the 2 you corrected on Monday.

Some students had to finish the OBama letter questions, and I returned some graded papers.  Those of you who know you are missing work, be sure to get it completed and turned in as soon as possible.

Bring your business letter rough draft to class tomorrow along with your Reader's Journey book.

Literacy-

I returned several graded papers today and told those who were missing assignments.  Get those to me as soon as possible.

Language Arts-

DGP #3 Quiz today.
Retake preposition test today.

Reader's Journey-Read page 380 and complete the bottom fill-in-the blank about prepositions.  Then, ready "What Do Fish Have to do with Anything" on page 367.  As you read, underline at least 10 prepositional phrases and circle the prepositions that go with the phrases.  You may highlight if you wish.  And, you may mark more than 10 if you want, too.
Finish reading the story.

Bring in some candy wrappers.... not the candy....for a class activity next week.

Literacy-

After reading silently, we completed an onomatopoeia worksheet.  We began an activity about hyperbole.  We will finish it on Monday.

Try to stay dry this weekend.

Language Arts-

DGP #3 Quiz tomorrow.  STUDY!

Differences between the friendly and business letters were written on the venn diagram. Keep these in your notebook.

Mock Writing Assessment-November 4, Wednesday.
We read and discussed several writing prompts to prepare for the writing practice test. This should help you in being able to know what to look for in your writing prompt   Be sure to know the topic,
how exactly you are to write it (format), who you are writing to, and whether it is a letter, essay, persuasive or expository paper that you are to be writing.

Literacy-

After reading silently, we checked the two worksheets, alliteration and personification.

Language Arts-

Preposition Test tomorrow!  STUDY!

DGP#3-Parts of Speech for each word.
Remember to put everything that applies to nouns, verbs, etc....not just one answer for each.

If you did not turn in your friendly letter final copy in ink today, it is due in class tomorrow.

After the test on prepositions, we will begin work on a business letter.

Literacy-

We completed the alliteration activity and turned it in.  Tomorrow in my absence, the substitute will have you complete a worksheet on alliteration and personification.  What you don't finish is for homework.

Language Arts-

DGP #3-Correct the sentence.
for Cats run quick threw thee yerd?

Technical Writing-We watched a video streaming segment about friendly letters and took notes on a venn diagram.  We will fill in the business letter part later on in the week. 
Assignment:  Come to class tomorrow with your friendly letter rough draft ready to be proofread by a classmate and me.  Then, you will write your final copy in ink. You are to write a friendly letter to a friend or family member telling about your Halloween plans or Thanksgiving plans.  This may be made up or funny or, of course, real.
 Please bring an ink pen, blue or black ink.

Preposition Test-Wednesday.  STUDY!

Literacy-

A few of you need to finish the simile/metaphor quiz from today.  Then, I will give all of you some time to finish the alliteration activity since we had the fire drill today.

Memorize them in order!  You will not be able to get them all if you memorize them randomly. See the list at the end of the blog.

Technical Vocabulary was turned in today for a grade after checking the definitions in the Reader's Journey.  Be sure to bring this textbook to class from now on unless I tell you different. See the list of words at the end of the blog today.

Literacy-

We did not have class today because of the Good Conduct party.  We will have the quiz on metaphors and similes on Monday.

STUDY!  Test Friday.

Technical Writing Unit:
We began writing the vocabulary for technical writing and will finish it up tomorrow.  Be sure to write everything correctly because it will be graded.

Write each word in alphabetical order with the definition.  Skip a line between each word.
