Week of May 11th.

Hello Again from Mr. West!

It’s hard to believe, but we are rapidly approaching the end of another school year here at Awtrey. We hope to get our Field Day celebration kicked off this Wednesday if the crazy weather will cooperate. Let us all keep our fingers crossed.

Math 7 –

Monday is the deadline for all make-up work to be turned in. Please ensure that you turn in any needed work in order to improve those grades. We have been working on the Benchmark Study guide and will continue to do so. I am placing a link on this site for anyone needing a study guide replacement. We will have the Benchmark Test on Thursday and Friday of this week. It is a lengthy test requiring 2 days, which should be sufficient.

Week of April 27th.

Hello Again from Mr. West!

Welcome back to another week in our mathematics class. We are quickly approaching the end of our school year. It’s hard to believe we only have 20 more school days in this year.

Math 7 –

Monday will mark the end of CRCT testing with Social Studies. We will be working on our Tessellation Project which counts as 15% of our grade. It is important to remember that we still must remain focused on our academics, even with the end so close. There are many more days of productive learning ahead. This means there are ample opportunities to improve those grades in need. Any student wishing to make up any missing work is welcome to see me. I will be glad to help in any way possible.

Week of April 20th.

Hello Again from Mr. West!

Welcome once again to our wonderful world of mathematics. We hope you can join us for Awtrey’s Family Night this Friday, April 24, from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.  Enjoy a silent auction, craft fair, Awtrey student dance, family movie and food with other members of our school community!

Math 7 –

This week we begin CRCT testing. It is vital that all students get plenty of rest this entire week. As such, there will be no graded assignments coming home from our class. Students should be preparing for their upcoming tests. Our students should also eat a good breakfast every day. This is an important part of their testing success. Students should also have at least 2 sharpened #2 pencils with them. The Math CRCT will be held on Thursday. For information regarding the testing schedule, it may be viewed on the Awtrey home page. Everyone has worked very hard for this day, so let us do our best to achieve victory in our learning endeavors.

Math Literacy –

We will wrap up our work with budgeting this week. In association with budgeting, we will be investigating other aspects of our finances and what they entail.

All students should remember to bring a book to class every day.

Have a marvelous week!

Week of March 30th.

Hello Again from Mr. West!

Here is the week we have all been looking forward to…Spring Break!!! That’s right; the end of this Friday will be the start of a much needed rest by all. I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and happy vacation.

Math 7 –

Before we begin our well-deserved rest, we must think about our end of Unit 7’s test. The test will be held on Wednesday. A comprehensive study guide will be distributed on Monday. I will endeavor to place a link to this study guide here on the blog for anyone needing it. We will also be spending time working on our end of unit project, Cool Cross-Sections. This project will be due before the end of class, April 3rd. Ample class time will be given this week for students to work on their projects.

Week of March 16th

 Hello Again from Mr. West!

Here we are together again for our fourth entry. We are ending up our 3rd quarter, which means that it is time for report cards. Report cards will be coming home on the 19th of this week, so be sure to look for them. I know all our students are anxious to display how well they are doing in class.

Math 7 –

We ended Unit 6 with a comprehensive test this past week. The end of Unit 6 also marks the end of the 3rd academic quarter. We begin the fourth quarter by completing our review for the benchmark test on Monday, with the actual test to be held on Tuesday. On Wednesday we will begin Unit 7.

Week of March 9th

Hello Again from Mr. West!

It looks like our third entry has found us experiencing some more surprising Georgia weather. I hope everyone had the opportunity to get out and enjoy that marvelous sunshine this past weekend.

Math 7 –

We will be wrapping up our Unit 6 with a review of all the material associated with Inverse and Direct Variation on Monday. The study guide for our Unit 6 test was distributed to all on Friday so that our class time could be spent toward any troublesome areas. We will finish with the study guide on Monday with the Unit 6 test to be given on Tuesday. Please be certain to study every resource so that you may be successful on your exam. We will also be doing our test corrections this week…if any are needed. This is to be a busy week where testing is concerned. Thursday we will also be giving out our study guide that is designed to prepare us for the upcoming benchmark exams. That will give us several days of preparation prior to the actual benchmark tests next week.

Once again, I am going to keep these sites up for Direct and Inverse variations. I know they can be very helpful to some:

Week of March 2!

Hello Again from Mr. West!

I hope that this second entry finds everyone having enjoyed a wonderful weekend. The snow on Sunday was a beautiful distraction.

Please remember that Tuesday, March 3, will be early release day here at Awtrey Middle School. The students will be leaving us at 2:15 p.m.

Math 7 –

We will be finishing up the Inverse Variation section of Unit 6 this week. We will work on word problems relating to this topic to clarify any areas of concern. A quiz will be given this week on Inverse Variation, so we will be working on the study guide for the quiz. It is important to remember that Inverse Variation differs in appearance from Direct Variation and cannot be solved by utilizing a proportion. Inverse Variation’s equation is: y = k/x. What this equation says is that since k is our constant of variation and does not change; when the value of x increases, the value of y decreases. The variables are represented by (x,y) being the coordinates and "k" representing the constant in the problem (the value that does not change). One example: If the temperature of natural gas is a constant 24 degrees, the volume of gas varies inversely with the pressure. If the pressure is 12 pounds per square inch, the volume would be 2 cubic feet.

We will also be working on the “Spring Break” activity this week, along with the study guide for the upcoming end of Unit 6 Test to be held next week. Please be sure to work on your math every night, especially the example given here.

I am going to keep these sites up for Direct and Inverse variations. I know they can be very helpful to some:

Math Literacy –

We will focus on real world examples of math utilization this week. An example of this would be how to read and fill out tax forms.

Have a marvelous week!

Week of Feb. 23rd!

Welcome from Mr. West!

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Ricky West and I have the great pleasure of filling in as the Supply Teacher for Mrs. Humphrey during her absence. I graduated with honors from Kennesaw State University with a focus on Mathematics and Social Science, but Math is my favorite subject, although History comes in a very close second.

I, along with Mrs. Humphrey and her supportive team, will endeavor to keep Mrs. Humphrey’s classroom the positive learning environment you have come to expect at Awtrey Middle School.

.

Math 7 –

We will be wrapping up the Direct Variation section of Unit 6 this week. We will work on 3 word problems for a greater understanding. We will also be assessing for comprehension by giving a Convergence Mastery exercise on Monday. A quiz will be given this week on Direct Variation, so we will be working on the study guide for the quiz. Download Direct Variation study guide

We will also begin the Inverse Variation part of Unit 6 this week. Inverse Variation differs in appearance from Direct Variation. Inverse Variation’s equation is: y = k/x . 2 ft3 = .

Week of Feb. 16th!

Pres. day Welcome to President's Day! I hope you all have a great shorten week!

I hate to to say it, but I am on bed rest as of Sat. 2/14. Baby Emily tried to enter into the world a little to early, but the doctor's stopped her! My job right now is to keep her healthy for at least 2 more weeks so that she will weigh a little more! I will miss each of you dearly, but continue as you would for me. I will feed the supply teacher with lesson plans from home and will complete your grades for as long as I can.

Be sure to give the supply teacher, Mr. West the same respect as you would give me. Also, give him the 100% that you have given me all year!! I'll keep you all posted on little Emily's arrival!

Math 7 -
You will complete test corrections and finish the Simplifying Expressions worksheet from Friday. Overall, the tests were GREAT! I was very pleased and most of you should be too! As for the rest of the week, we will begin unit 6 which deals with direct and indirect variation. Direct variation has an equation of: y = kx. The variables are represented by (x,y) being the coordinates and "k" representing the constant in the problem (the value that does not change. One example: I make $8.00 an hour and work 20 hours this week. How much money will I make. The $8.00 is my contant (since my pay rate does not change). The number of hours that I work and how much money I make can vary, which will be the (x,y) values.

Math Literacy -
We will focus on menu math this week as well as saving money while eating out.

Have a great week!

February 08, 2009

Week of Feb. 9th!

It's almost the Winter Ball...7th and 8th graders have been waiting for this evening!  Remember to have your permission slip signed and bring it to school this week to pay for your ticket during lunch. The Awtrey dress code does apply. No strapless or spaghetti strap gowns and be watchful of the length of the dress as well.

Math 7 -
We will wrap up unit 5 with a review activity on Monday. We will work on the six most questioned problems as a group and discuss. We will work on the study guide Tuesday and check it on Wednesday. There will be a review game on Thursday and the unit 5 test will be Friday, 2/13! Please be sure to study and practice a few problems EACH night this week to ensure that you are ready. This has been a long unit, so be prepared! A few of the major concepts covered are: ratios, proportions, similar figures, dilation's, scale factor and knowing your 4-quadrant coordinate plane.

Math Literacy -
We will focus on job ideas for 15 and younger..."Beyond the LemonadeStand"! You will think of a means of income at your age right now and create a flyer that could be posted in your community.

Have a great week!
