10/1-10/5

Math

This week in math will be taking our second test of the year. The test will be on Wednesday. Monday in class the students will be given a study guide. The study guide will be very similar to the test. They will be completing the study guide in class and using them to study. On Tuesday, the students will be completing a writing assessment over the same material. This also will be completed in class. At the end of the week, we will be starting our next unit. This unit will be reviewing fraction operations. This upcoming unit is probably the most important unit of the year. If there are any questions I can be reached via email david.bell@cobbk12.org or by phone 770-975-6615.

9/17-9/21

Math

This week we will be continuing our unit on factors and multiples. We will be learning about exponents and prime factorization. The students will learn to make factor trees. These factor trees will help determine prime factorization and can be used to determine the greatest common factor of a group of numbers. These concepts should be fairly easy, but the textbook and workbook are great resources if the students have difficulty.

Week of 8/10-8/14

Math

In math this week we are learning rules of divisibility. The students were given rules to determine if a number is divisible by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, and 10. These rules are located on page 164 of their textbook if they forget. They will practice using these rules Tuesday and Wednesday. Then we will use these rules to identify all prime numbers up to 100. They will learn the definitions of prime and composite numbers. This will lead us into factors and multiples next week.

Week of 9/3-9/7

Math

This week we will be finishing our data unit. The students will complete a project in which they choose a question to answer, create a frequency table to collect data, display the data on the most appropriate graph, and finally write a paragraph explaining their findings. They will receive instructions Tuesday and it will be due Friday. We will review on Wednesday for the test on Thursday. On Friday we will begin introducing vocabulary for the next unit(factors & multiples).

Study Skills

This week we will introduce Mountain Math, a new program to help reinforce our math curriculum. We will also continue our use of the computer program Skills Tutor.

Welcome to Awtrey

Welcome to all new 6th graders and their families. Thank you to all who came to meet and greet. It was nice to meet everyone. On August 28th Awtrey will hold an open house, please make plans to attend.

Math

In math this week we are continuing our unit on data. We will be creating and interpreting bar graphs, frequency tables, histograms, and line plots. This information will be covered in class with only some homework. Books will be issued this week and students will be allowed to take them home. Chapter 6 of the textbook contains information that may be helpful for students and parents at home. Students should also be listing assignments and homework in their agenda so they won't forget. I am available by email if anyone should have specific questions.

Study Skills

This class will focus mostly on math. We will work on individual skills that will help students perform better in math class. We will also address homework issues as they arise. This class will require little work outside of school.

Week of 2/26-3/2

6th grade

This week we will be discussing similar figures. Primarily we will be looking at triangles and rectangles. The information is not in the book, but students have a page of notes from class  that they can refer back to for help. Proportions are used to solve for missing sides and to determine similarity. Proportions should be a review,  if students forget how to solve them refer to the textbook pages 317-320. We will finish the week with some practice CRCT questions.

7th grade

We began our week with practice CRCT problems. Starting Wednesday, we will discuss direct variation. There will be little homework as this new concept is somewhat difficult and the material is not in our textbook. Near the end of the week the students will complete a task using direct variation and while using the want ads to find a job.

Math 6

This week we have been measuring, classifying, and constructing angles. We have been learning and reviewing how to use protractors. The students have been engaged and excited. They have mostly been using their workbook pages 64 & 65 for their assignments. The math book chapter 9 may be helpful to review at home. Next, we will be discussing symmetry. The students will discuss line symmetry and rotational symmetry. They will be introduced to Geo mirrors and how to use then. The last part of chapter 9 of the textbook can be referenced for help at home.

Math 7

This week we have been discussing We identified corresponding parts and set out to determine congruence of figures. The students discovered the 3 proofs for determining congruence of triangles. Then moved on to discover the length of missing sided of congruent figures. Proportions and equations were used to solve for these variables. The students took a quiz today and will be examining their scores tomorrow. Remember that warm-up sheets are due each Friday.

Wlecome Back

I have a new schedule for the new year. It is as follows:

  • 2nd    Math 7th inclusion with Mrs. Humphrey
  • 3rd     Math small group 7th grade
  • 4th     Math small group  6th grade
  • 5th     Math 6th inclusion with Mrs. Nation
  • 7th     Math study skills for sith grade

When looking for assignments or information about 2nd or 5th period plese check Mrs. Humphrey's or Mrs. Nation's blog. For assignments or information about 3rd, 4th, or 7th period check here.

3rd-math 7

We are reviewing equations. We will be solving for the variables in equations. There will be fractions, decimals, and negative integers in our equations. Please review the rules for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using each. We will be using the Pre-Algebra textbook as a resource, but not everyday. Chapter 7 in the book has some of the information.

4th-math 6

We will be solving one step equations. There will be fractions and decimals in the problems. We will be using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to solve these problems. The text book can be used a resource, look to chapter 12.

7th-study skills

We will be practicing skills useful for the CRCT test in the spring. We will be completing practice tests online and from test practice books. We will also spend time reviewing and reinforcing what was taught in math class and hopefully clarify homework questions. This class should require little to no homework and should help students feel more comfortable about the upcoming CRCT.

Holiday Break

It has been a while since my last blog update. I was not aware that anyone actually checked my blog. I apologize and will make a better effort to keep it updated. The i-parent website will be out of service during the break. The official notice is below:

The SchoolMAX application iParent module will not be available from 7:00am Wednesday, December 20th through 7:00am Monday, January 8th due to end of semester final exams and administrative requirements.

Thank you for your patience and support.

For the students in my 4th period math class we are finishing the unit on ratios and proportions. This information is located in chapter 8 of the textbook and work book. We will be discussing equations when we return for the break. Have students review basic math skill during the holiday break.  Other classes should look the content teachers blog for more up to date information.

Week of September 25th

Math

We will be having a short quiz over exponents and expressions on Tuesday. We will then begin our unit on factors and multiples. Wednesday and Thursday we will be learning divisibility rules and practicing their use. Friday we will explore prime and composite numbers. This material is located in the beginning of chapter 5 of the student textbook, but we will be using many outside resources as well.

Literacy

There will be schedule changes on Tuesday 9/26. Everyone will be moving to different groups for the rest of the grading period. I will be moving to a team taught class with Mrs. Nation. More information to come later.
