Quarter Two — Week 5

This week we start wrapping up Unit 3 as we begin a lesson on Inequalities in one variable.

Our EQ for the week: “How do I show that there’s more than one answer to a problem?”

Our learning topics for the week feature: graphing & writing inequalities, solving and graphing one-step inequalities, and solving & graphing multi-step inequalities.

Lesson materials are paralleled in the Holt textbook in chapter 1 section 9 and in chapter 11 sections 4 & 5.  The video tutorials in these sections are helpful for reviewing the concepts we’re learning.

Quarter Two — Week 4’s Here

This week we will prepare for a summative test on equations.

Our EQ for the week: “How can I use algebra to solve for a variety of equation types, including those involving absolute value terms?” Monday we will review Friday’s learning topic on how to solve absolute value equations and then work through some practice problems.

No school on Tuesday.

Starting study guide Wednesday for test on Friday.

Thursday we’ll review study guide using some type game.

Friday we’ll take test.

Q2-W3 Thursday Update

The learning objective for today was to understand the steps involved in solving an equation with multiple variables for one variable in terms of the others.  Our essential question was: How can I find the length of an NBA player's feet based on his shoe size from a formula that gives shoe size in relation to the length of a person's foot?

Unit 3, Equations and Inequalities in one variable, continues this week.

Students’ homework for today is page 12 of the red Holt Algebra 1 workbook.  Today’s class work came from page 596 in the Holt textbook.  The prior 2 or 3 pages provide additional examples for these problems (#1-6, 13-18, 25-30).

Algebra Tiles Activity 10/22/09

ON- LINE ALGEBRA TILES ACTIVITY

1) Click the following link to get to the on-line textbook http://my.hrw.com

2) Login with userid: vikings5 and password: m9n6

3) Select link for “Go to on-line textbook”

4) Select Videos & Activities tab

5) Select “Algebra Tiles” link under the Tools button

6) Choose the “Solve a Given Equation” option from the top right drop down box

7) As partners, work out and record 1, one-step equation, 2, two-step equations, 2 variables on both sides equations, and seven others of your choice between the three types.  EACH PARTNER MUST SHOW HIS/HER WORK ON A SEPARATE WORK SHEET.  Each work sheet has 12 places to record the problems; six on each side.  TAKE TURNS MANIPULATING THE TILES ON THE COMPUTER.

8) INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETING THE RECORD SHEET; FOR EACH PROB.:

§  Write the given equation in the top, long rectangle.

§  Write the final answer you get in the next two rectangles; the program will have the answer there when you’re done.

§  In the two larger boxes, draw a picture of the algebra tiles for the given equation.  Each box represents one side of the equation.

§  Show your work by crossing out the tiles you have to remove from the board to get to the solution.

§  If you have to add some negative or positive tiles to create zero pairs, draw them in as large circles for x’s and smaller circles for units.

§  At the bottom of the large boxes, draw the final picture of the tiles that represent the solution.

Quarter Two — Week 2

Unit 3, Equations and Inequalities in one variable, picks up steam this week.

EQ for this week: “How can I make sense of what often looks like alphabet soup in algebraic expressions and equations in order to find a solution?”  The associated learning topics are: (1) how to combine like terms including use of the distributive property; (2) procedure for solving 2-step equations; (3) how to solve 2-step equations requiring combination of like terms and use of distributive property; (4) solving equations with variables on both sides of the equation.

 

Note: This week’s lesson material is paralleled in chapter eleven of the Holt textbook, sections 1-3.
