Next to last Wednesday

Today’s Agenda:

1) Warm up #5.

          (1) Find the equation of the line in slope intercept format that has a slope of 5 and goes through the point (3, 5).  Since linear equations in the slope intercept format (y = mx + b) all have the two variables y and x, all we need to determine is the value of m and b to be able to produce the equation.  The problem gives us our “m” (the slope), which is 5, so all we have to do is find the b.  Since we are also given that the line goes through the point (3, 5), we know that this ordered pair is one solution to the equation we’re looking for.  Consequently, we can put those values, along with the given slope, into our form and solve for b.  This will then allow us to complete our equation.  We can substitute in our given values to find b as follows: y is 5, m is 5, and x is 3, so we have 5 = 5(3) + b; b then works out to be -10.  Our final answer will be y = 5x – 10.

          (2) Find the equation of the line that has a slope of 2 and goes through the point (5, 7).  Working this one just like #1, we substitute in our given values so that 7=2(5)+b; so b is -3 and our equation becomes y = 2x – 3.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

2) Classwork consisted of a review game over slope concepts.  Students moved from desk to desk to work different problems in a number of variations to help reinforce linear equation/ slope concepts.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
3) NO Homework.
======================
Notes & Reminders:
=====================
1) Tomorrow students will be offered a menu of four tests they can retake to improve their grades on those assessments.  Those four include: inequalities, sets and functions, sequences, and slope concepts.  I also plan to provide opportunity on Friday for students to retake some of these and last Thursday’s tests (graphing linear inequalities, parallel lines’ concepts, and linear systems) they didn’t have time to complete on the two Thursdays.
It for now,
Tuesday's Tournament
Today’s Agenda:
1) Warm up #4.
          (1) Find the slope, m, of the points (6, 8) and (3, 10).  Using the slope formula (y2 – y1)/(x2 – x1) we get m = -2/3.
          (2) What is the equation of the line passing through the points (-4, -4) and (0, 2)?  Using our slope formula we get a slope, m, of 3/2.  We can see from the second point that our y-intercept, b, is 2.  So our equation in slope-intercept form,
y = mx + b, is y = 3/2x + 2.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++
2) Classwork consisted of a “Risky Business” game over concepts from unit 4.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

3) NO Homework.

======================

Notes & Reminders:

=====================

1) Wednesday we will continue to review material from the third nine weeks to prepare students to retake a quiz or test from that grading period to achieve a higher score(s).  These reviews will also help students review for the final exam which will occur on 5/21/08.

All Done,

One Monday Remains

Today’s Agenda:

1) Warm up #3.  Solve and graph the inequality 3w + 6 < 5w – 8.  We solve this by collecting like terms on either side of the inequality: subtract 3w from and add 8 to both sides, yielding 14 < 2w, which reduces to 7 < w.  This would be
w > 7 in standard form and the number line graph for it would start with a solid dot on the 7, with the heavy line extending to the right.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

2) A slew of graded papers were returned, including make up tests turned in last Thursday.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
3) The warm up helped us prepare for the “Race to the Top” review game covering inequalities.
======================
Notes & Reminders:
=====================
1) Tomorrow and Wednesday we will continue to review material from the third nine weeks
to prepare students to retake a quiz or test from that grading period to achieve a higher score(s).  These reviews will also help students review for the final exam which will occur on 5/21/08.
Two Thursdays to go
Today’s Agenda:
1) Three make up tests were provided to students for any who had a previous grade on any of them that was less than 80.  The tests correlated to units 5, 6, and 7.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++
2) Students not needing/ wanting to make up a test worked on an alternate activity making use of a graphing calculator to solve an area problem.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

3) NO HW

======================

Notes & Reminders:

=====================

1) Tomorrow is Field Day; Hooray!

2) Next week we will review material from the third nine weeks to prepare students to retake a quiz or test from that grading period to achieve a higher score(s).  These reviews will also help students review for the final exam which will occur on 5/21/08.

Enough,

Mr. Barker

May 07, 2008

Two more Wednesdays

Today’s Agenda:

1) Warm up #2; Solve the linear system by the combination method:  3y -2x = 6
                   4x – 2y = 8
We solved this by reordering the first equation to be -2x + 3y = 6.  We then multiplied it by 2 to get
-4x + 6y =12.  This combined with
4x – 2y = 8 to get 4y = 20.  Solving for y we get 5; plugging 5 into one of the original equations for y lets us solve for x which winds up 4.5; so our answer is (4.5, 5)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

2) Study guide for make up quizzes/ tests over units 5-7.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
3) HW: Review study guide.
======================
Notes & Reminders:
=====================
1) Tomorrow students will be able to retake some quizzes or tests from earlier in this grading period to achieve a higher score(s).
2) Next week we will review material from the third nine weeks to prepare students to retake a quiz or test from that grading period to achieve a higher score(s).  These reviews will also help students review for the final exam which will occur on 5/21/08.
Later,
Mr. Barker
May 06, 2008
Two Tuesdays
Today’s Agenda:
1) Holt Mathematics Textbooks were collected today.  Students whose books were missing or damaged received a form to take home for parental signature.  The sanction for failing to return the form (or the missing book) will be forfeiture of field day participation.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++
2) Third quarter grades were posted in the room for students to review.  They were to take note of which quizzes or tests they want to retake on Thursday, 5/15/08.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

3) 4th Quarter review activity.  Students were placed in groups of four to team up on problems from units 5-7.  Students used coordinate white boards to record chosen problems/ answers.

-------------------------------------------

4) NO Homework

======================

Notes & Reminders:

=====================

1) We’ll continue to review 4th nine weeks material on Wednesday to help prepare students to retake some quizzes or tests from that grading period to achieve a higher score(s).

2) Next week we will review material from the third nine weeks to prepare students to retake a quiz or test from that grading period to achieve a higher score(s).  These reviews will also help students review for the final exam which will occur on 5/21/08.
